We had a long holiday and we just thought a few days before the weekend that we should just take a bus and go somewhere. And Jaipur it was, there are some many things to do in Jaipur. The Pink City. The capital city of Rajasthan still oozes charm, is full of culture and some forts in the city will leave you breathless. With only two days in the city, we wanted to explore everything. From the best things to eat in Jaipur, to Top things to do in Jaipur!
Located 11 km from Jaipur, we decided to take an auto till there. The fort is located on a high hill and is the principal attraction in Jaipur area. This huge fort was ruled by Raja Man Singh. Overlooking the beautiful lake(even Udaipur is beautiful in terms of lakes), this massive fort is sure to leave you enchanted. IF you go in peak summers like us, the thought of climbing 800 steps to reach the fort will seem like a daunting task. To our surprise and relief, you can hire and car and go till the top (for the price of Rs 500) The opulent palace is laid out in four stories, with much to see and explore. There’s a hall for public audience, Hall of private audience and a Jai Mandir. This makes for the top things to do in Jaipur.
Vagabond Tip: If you are in Jaipur in the summer months, maybe consider giving the Amer Palace a miss during the day. As it’s super hot and the thought of climbing 800 steps to reach the fort is daunting. (even if you take the Jeep for Rs 500 to reach the fort, it will be pretty tough to enjoy the fort because of the heat) However, you must visit the Amer Fort at night and watch the Sound and light show!

2) Hawa Mahal:
One of the most important and architecturally stunning monuments in Jaipur, Hawa Mahal is hard to miss! This “Palace of Winds” is located in the heart of the pink city and is a prominent landmark of the city. Having never been inside, we went here at on the last day of our trip at 9 am. Maybe the best decision, because it wasn’t hot and the crowds were less. This palace was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh of the Kachhwaha Rajput dynasty. This place was made so that the queens could sit along the many windows of the mahal and see the street processions pass by. We loved exploring all the three stories of the mahal, which are beautiful in its own way. Definitely one of the best things to do in Jaipur.
Vagabond Tip: Make a visit to this monument in the morning when it opens, 9:30 am. As the crowds are less and this place looks magnificent in the morning rays.
3) Bapu Bazaar:
Jaipur is considered one of the best place for shopping in Rajasthan. Whether you are looking for some cotton textiles or some beautiful Rajasthani suits, or even Jaipuri blankets; there’s no market better than the Bapu Bazaar! This is also in the “Pink Area” of the city, so even if you’re not interested in shopping do visit here. You will see old style market which is pink in colour and many sellers selling beautiful handiworks, crafts and arts. You can also buy some amazing and comfortable shoes and flats at throw away prices! Don’t miss Bapu Bazaar on your list of Things to do in Jaipur.
4) City Palace:
The royal palace of Jaipur, City palace is a must-see. The palace was constructed by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II. The City palace is spread over a large area and occupies one seventh of Old Jaipur. There are magnificent courtyards, temples, museums and much more to see inside the grand city palace. Since it’s quite a big place, it take around one or two hours to see the entire building. The most beautiful area of the place is restricted off for a select few. The Chandra Mahal is a four story building, which has a separate fee of Rs 2500, but it’s a must-visit. Definitely a must thing to do in Jaipur.
Vagabond Tip: Visit the City Palace in the morning and do try to go to Chandra Mahal as well, even though the fees for it is separate and high – Rs 2500.
